There's something nasty in the swamp

A bunch of adventures returned from a swampy area to the west of the city after accepting a job from a clan of kobolds working in that area. They returned with tales of pony sized rats, giant sentient snakes and a swamp that was full of some sort of ancient corruption that was causing wierd mutations.
The kobolds had hired the party to deal with the rats for them but refused to say what they were doing there and told the party to 'stay away unless we need you again'. It was also noticed that there was an ancient ziggurat structure near a large lake in the swamp and the kobolds did mention there were 'rotters' coming out of the lake. Undead zombies?
Something dark and dire is going on in there for sure.
