The New Imperial Trade Company became one of the most powerful mercantile guilds in the continant, seemingly overnight. Founded by a Wilhelm Dhingra, bastard son of a minor Imperial noblewoman and a prominent Akosh merchant, he used the small amount of money that his father gave him out of pity and turned it into a successful business. The name comes not from any alliance that the man has to his mother's homeland but his own dreams and aspirations; to create his own empire – not one of states and lords but one of coin and commerce.
Despite its success, however, it is not without its detractors. The Company rose to power by buying out its competitors – sometimes even when their rivals had no intention on selling. Critics claim that the “New Empire” walks a legal gray line and occasionally dips into the black, protected only by their wealth. Even within the city of Tel Vinrae there are some who are uneasy with the guild because it has a private army and is lead by a man who all but admits he would own the world if he could.
