Social Classes
Social Hierarchy is an important for a city to function - especially with a port city like Tel Vinrae. All these people living so close together makes the Hierarchy like law.
Nobility
- Owns land (usually outside of the port in their home regions)
- Has beautiful estates outside the city
- Follows the rules of chivalry
- Often distains the merchants
Merchants
The city lives on its trade and it's the merchants who keep such trade going. They hold a place in the Hierarchy of the city that rivals the nobility at times. There is rumor that some are gaining wealth by exploiting the greed of war-bound Mileria.
- Newly rich
- Gained wealth in industries (wool, processing, boat making, & banking)
- Sought to protect their wealth by controlling the government & marrying into noble families.
The Middle Class
The city is luckily home to a thriving middle class. Men and women who make their living through craft and services. In their own right, the middle class receive a great deal of respect and having a well honed craft can be just what a person needs to rise up in the ranks of society.
- Shopkeepers
- Professionals
- Respected Scholars
Peasants
Most would say they are unwashed and no better than farm animals (Depending on who you ask). In reality the peasants make up the majority of the workers that keep the city running. They work in the fields just beyond Tel Vinrae and carry goods to the docks, patch up roofs and perform hundreds of other jobs that are manual but essential in most cases. There are two types of peasant, the urban and the rural (field farm types). They both experience the strife of poverty and have little job protection and are dependent on their employers, but life is a bit easier for the urban peasant since within the city walls where there are more opportunities for a chance at coin.
- Most reside in Deadman's Knot
- Some live in shanties outside the city (offers little protection, bandits are often a threat)
- Can change status by joining the military or wedding.
- Urban Peasants have a chance to learn a trade if they are smart and have kind masters.
