The Barrenlands
The flora of the Barren lands is dominated by a tough and deep rooted grass which remains green during the spring and fall, but turns a brown during the winter and throughout the roughest summer months. There are a variety of flowers, most of which bloom twice yearly, once in the spring, then again in the fall. Also part of the landscape is a variety brush and shrubs. There is however an occasional tree, these trees tent to be squat and branching widely. The fauna Of the Barren lands largely burrowing animals, including the greatly sought after Lopidor. Also upon these lands are the Govi, seasonally dependent of course. Herds of large game move through the area which also bring the larger predators and pack hunters.
- Lopidor: A Small, Burrowing animal, typically no larger than 3ft in length (~1m). The Lopidor is an herbivore which tends to remain in the waist high grasses of the Barrenlands, making it extremely difficult to hunt without trained, scent tracking animals. The Lopidor is abundant in the Barrenlands, but do exist in small number in the surrounding grasslands. The fur of the Lopidor as an opalescent white, making them quite easy to spot in the spring to fall seasons, but near impossible to find in the winter, when they are more available and scavenging for available food. The fur of this animal makes it considerably hard to hit with any ranged weapon during daylight. The effect, while moving, is similar to that of a Displacer Beast, making its position difficult to interpret. The pelts are highly prized and desired for it's luster as well as the station it implies.
The Burning Wastes
The Burning wastes have little in the way of flora, but any found is extremely durable and resilient as the terrain is not only hostile, but has little in the way of sustaining any life. With the little rainfall, and the fast loss of that same water, any flora is restricted to thick stemmed, leafless brush, and various tubers. Due to the nature of this land, there is nearly nothing here which is not dangerous nor venomous. The majority of this are insects and reptiles, there have also been noted a small number of denizens of the elemental plane of fire.
- Demons Hat: A fungus, which grows upon the The carcasses of any unfortunate animals who happen into The Burning Wastes. The fungus eventually coats the carcass, emitting a tar like substance which absorbs the heat of the terrain. This substance hardens and crusts, protecting the fungus and the animal corpse from further damage from the heat of the Wastes. This can be cultivated and processed by knowledgeable herbalists to create a fire resistant patina to various materials.
The Drowned Marshes
The Marshes contain perhaps the greatest number of plant species across Mileria. The wetland is formed by a slight basin filled by overflow of rivers Yorirk, and Aravnis. Much of the land is dominated by saw grass, papyrus and water lilies. A number of plants within the marshes are toxic, making foraging a dark consideration. The creatures of the Marshes are numerous, and many of them dangerous. The more mundane venomous reptiles and aggressive crocodile prove more than a little precarious, where the other denizens of the land remain not only dangerous, but some intelligent. There have been rumors of such mystical beings as Harpies and Hydras, and darker denizens like Undead.
- As is typical of all lands, each toxin has a local remedy. the same is true of the Drowned Marshes. Within this area is a caterpillar which feeds upon many of the toxic plants within the wetlands. The smooth, black and red striped creature produces an enzyme which can immediately neutralize any poison. This effect is often processed and incorporated with other elements to reduce the naturally bitter taste of the insect, but it can be eaten whole if needed to receive the effect.
Black's Mar Fen
The Flora of this fen is at times more dangerous then the fauna. The lack of soil nutrients in this area has produced plants which commonly rely on the decay of creatures. Here the common plants consist of Flytraps, Pitcher plants, though the fen is dominated by peat. Everything breathing in the fen is carnivorous and hungry, there are no plant eaters in the area, as the plants bite back. This creates a number of sharp fanged monsters who are voracious and/or cunning. Such creatures as Manticores and Hags have been mentioned to dwell here. Undead are not uncommon here.
- Black's Mar Fen is the home of an adapted Cyprus tree, which secretes a flamable sap. this sap is processed, Blackburn, is commonly applied to torches, or often carried to easily create make-shift torches while reducing the weight and space required to bring such items along.
Blackbright: Produces a white, brilliant flame. this doubles the visibility of the torch, but reduces the lifetime to 1/2.
Blacktar: Endures a portion of the flame, elongating the life of the torch. This doubles the lifetime of the torch by twice normal
Blackburn: Applied to any surface will produce a low, long lasting flame. This acts as a normal torch with 1/2 lifetime, and 1/2 visibility.
Woodlands
The Woodlands around Mileria are dominated by trees and grasses, naturally. A habitat for a multitude of flowering plants, vines, and shrubbery. The sorts of trees are largely determined by altitude and climate. The woodlands to the south are composed mostly of Oak and Pine, where the woodland to the north has a large number of Firs and Birch. The creatures of the woodlands are various and many. a combination of herbavorial and carnivorous beasts and insects creates a balanced and level cycle of life. The quick, cunning prey opposing the sly, vicious predators make the unending circle of life and death most natural.
