The first six were members of a mercenary group known as the Red Runes - a capable group hired by the Rebels to help fight against the Imperial Army during the Battle of the Scarlet Fields. One of the first targets of the Dwarven Betrayal, their ranks were decimated and their banners were burned like many others on that day. The Red Runes suffered incredible losses and were leaderless, and so it is officially said that they disbanded at that point. However, six of their number that were left of the Thousand men they had sent to fight in the war decided to reform their group, and decided that rather than a full army of mercenaries, they would focus on smaller bands who could handle smaller problems with greater speed, increasing their profitability significantly by allowing their conscripts to work any job they saw fit, small or large, meaning a wider variety of skill levels could be brought into their company.
The original six, knowing that they needed to remain neutral in their stance on the war in order to maximize their profits, decided to base themselves in Tel Vinrae. Purchasing a simple home there just near the Golden Way with the last of their funds they had scraped together between each other, they quickly began working contracts for merchants, dignitaries and others in the area. Soon, the original Six expanded into nearly forty strong, then fifty, then more, as more and more refugees and adventurers were drawn away from the conflicts of the north and down to the neutral ground of Tel Vinrae. Contracts began pouring in from all over the lands: from the Imperial cities to the cities of the Omicron. The Chen-Kai began opening contracts that would take the Sigil's across the water, and the desert nomads of the Akosh and the Ajit requested aid for their own matters in their lands. Their numbers grew and their influence grew with it: wayside inn’s were constructed along major roads that catered to groups of Sigils traveling back and forth from various locations, barracks were set up in the major cities, and the Sigils began a formal ranking system to keep track of the experience of their various members.
Today, there are Sigil's in every major city and many small ones. The mercenary company has existed for well over 100 years and is known for its processes and capabilities. It has grown to several thousand strong, and has earned a place of respect with most every military faction: and even the elusive Eladrin race has welcomed the Sigil's to sit on the Council of Tel Vinrae, showing a great respect between both groups for one another.
