"Woe to the Faekin, for we are the Opressed within this world. O! How it changes!" - Elven Ballad
Once, the elves of Meleria were lords. They ruled in their kingdoms, near immortal masters of their lands. Then Man came, with their armies and their petty wars and the once great nations were destroyed, just another causality in the all-consuming conflict between the Imperials and the Omicron. Now their lords are subjected and their people oppressed.
Only the Southern Nation, who is thought to be protected in accordance of location with Tel Vinrae. However, their city is closed off to outsiders unless granted special permission by the Council. It's said that no human has set foot within its inner fortress, and that those that dare to wander too close to their kingdom without permissions are never seen again.
The other nations - they live as refugees within the Eladrin great city and are welcome more out of pity than kinship. Those unlucky enough to be residents of Northern and Eastern Nations are subjected by the Empire while the elves of the Western Nation are caught up fighting in the Omicron's “war for freedom” whether they want to be or not.
...Still, despite all they suffer, they are proud people. As a whole, the race might be broken and bloodied yet they still remain unbowed. In what was once part of their great civilization, there are still some that live on their own terms - defiant of those around them. The elves of Tel Vinrae brought their own cultures and traditions with them, and within the walls of the Eladrin Fortress, they feel freer than they would be in their own homelands.
Called “high elves”, the elves of Tel Vinrae were once the artisans, lords, and scholars of their people. In the great city, they continue much as they once did. Those who considered themselves master craftsmen still continue their trades and the learned of their people often find themselves joining the Academy of Philosophies. Even their aristocrats find themselves with the opportunity to enter more bureaucratic professions.
That is not to say that it is easy for them. While it is not hard to believe that they might have an easier time adapting to the Eladrin city, their superior cousins show them no nepotism. They have to compete with pragmatic dwarves and ambitious humans and often their more introverted ways can hold them back. Unfortunately, for the older generation this means they are witnessing their ancient ways begin to wane as their younger kin decide start “living as half-men”.
(“Living as half-men” is a derogatory term the older generation coined to describe younger elves who decide to abandoned their ancient ways in order to make a name from themselves in Tel Vinrae on the cities terms. In comes from the idea that many half-elves only pay lip service to their elven heritage. This suggests that they are “less elven”.)
There are rumours, although unconfirmed, that the “wood elves” (formally, the working class of the elven people) still dwell in their ancestral homelands, defiant of whatever lord calls it their own. Especially in the region that was once the Eastern Kingdom, there are reports that those that enter the old forests baring Imperial markings never leave alive although the Empire itself denies such as superstition. After all, the elves have been properly subjugated and have successfully joined with them...
