Acquiring Leadership

Leadership marks you as someone that the people put faith in, or look up to - perhaps through status or accomplishments, or perhaps you bring aid to the common people.
Unlike in other D&D Games, the Leadership Feat is run differently on Tel Vinrae. Rather than being a feat which you choose to take (at 6th level or higher), the feat is earned (at 6th level or higher), as a bonus, to characters that have befriended a potential cohort to the point that cohort is willing to follow them. Further details on Cohorts and followers are below.
Characters who require Leadership for a particular class they are interested in taking should contact a DM and inform them of that need. It is possible that we will remove that pre-requisite for your class, or you will be provided a Cohort to interact with as soon as possible, to try and earn that cohort and the feat.
Please take special consideration of the values we have instated about Cohorts. Cohorts are their own characters entirely and, while not playable by a Player outside of interactions with their own character, the Cohorts are very much independent and live their own lives, have their own goals and motivations, and are not subservient to the PC that takes them in any specific way, unless such is part of their design.
Cohorts: A cohort is someone that values not only your friendship, but the qualities you possess as a Leader. However, despite their drawing towards you, they are a commoner, or someone that, before meeting you, likely lived a mundane life. In this case, before choosing a cohort, the Player's Character (PC) must have interacted with this NPC In Game through DM scenes or otherwise. The cohort must have a strong bond with the PC in order to be chosen. (This is done through In-Game scenes.)
Followers: Followers are a more loose term and go by the rules within the Core Books. However, all followers are NPC class only. Followers, unlike Cohorts, do not accompany the PC on adventures or provide them with special boons. Typically, Followers will stay in a static location and provide support to the PC through that location (example: A wizard has ten followers for use. Their followers are likely to be acolytes at the Academy: students, who are willing to research topics for the character, or help them brew alchemical items, etc.)

- A DM will build the cohort for the player. The Player will not know the build of the cohort until it is chosen, to prevent a player from not taking the cohort due to build. All cohorts will have at least two (2) NPC levels. Cohorts are not meant to be supplemental characters for the main character, but an individual in themselves that shares a bond with the PC - because of that, they are still NPCs being played by a player. Please note, at any time if a DM believes that a cohort is not being correctly played, a cohort can be NPC'd by a DM.
- A Cohort is built on a 28 Point Buy, instead of Tel Vinrae's 30 Point-Buy Standard.
- Please also note, that DMs are encouraged to be creative in the design of a cohort, but will not create the cohort specifically to target the needs of the Player Character. Cohorts are typically not characters that are attached to a PC's backstory.
- Cohorts can accompany PC's in adventures and typically are run by the player, though the DM can choose to run the Cohort or take it over if necessary. It is the players responsibility to familiarize themselves with the Cohorts personality and demeanor, as well as their sheets. Cohorts cannot be used to directly PvP against other players without both a DM present -and- the actual character with the leadership present as well.
- During scenes, a cohort applies a +2 AA skill bonus to any skill that they have access to, which the DM calls to be rolled. This includes Knowledges, Perceptions, Search Checks, Disable Device, Open Lock, Perform and other skills. Cohorts may have crafting skills for mundane crafting but they can only craft on their own if they are not played at all during their crafting period (though they can gain their own income, see below). Cohorts can craft alongside their leadership PC only by providing a +2 bonus to the PC's check, as per Aid Another rules.
- Cohorts earn XP and Income as per the core rulebooks.
- A DM building a cohort for a Player must submit a build and backstory noting the interactions, goals, and so forth to the DM Team for joint approval. This information will also be outlined on the cohort's characters sheet for future reference.
- Players do not level their own Cohorts. To level a cohort, a DM will note how the cohort has progressed. Their level progression will be maintained through their interactions In Character, their personal goals and aspirations, and proper acquirement of experience through adventures, RP and interactions.
